APA Style Guide for Music

The following referencing examples are for music resources only. For all other formats, please refer to Referencing at CQU guidelines.

Hint: Often correct details for referencing items can be found on the Library catalogue record.

Music Score

1. Name(s) of composer(s)

2. Date of publication in parenthesis ()

3. Title of publication (italicised)

4. Medium: score, choral score, miniature score, orchestral score in [square brackets]

5. Place of publication, followed by a colon:

6. Publisher

 

Examples:

Stravinsky, I. (1975). Rite of spring [Score]. London: Hansen House.

If the score is part of a collection or anthology:

Whitfield, N., & Strong, B. (1966). I heard it through the grapevine [Score]. In Motown anthology (pp.98-104). Milkwaukee, WI: Hal Leonard.

If there is an editor the reference would be:

Porter, C. (1953). It's all right with me [Score]. In W. L. Simon (Ed.), Treasury of great show tunes (pp.104-110). Pleasantville, NY: Reader's Digest.

Music Recording

1. Name(s) of composer(s)

2. Date of copyright in parenthesis ()

3. Title of song [Recorded by (if available) artist if different from writer]

4. On Title of album (italicised) [Medium of recording; CD cassette etc.]

5. Location: label

6. Recording date if different from copyright date

 

Examples:

Nicks, S. (1977). Dreams [Recorded by Fleetwood Mac]. On Rumours [CD]. Burbank, Calif.: WB Records.

Vine, C. (1996). 5 bagatelles [Recorded by I. Munro]. On Mere bagatelles [CD]. Australia: Tall Poppies.

Mussorgsky, M. P. (1994). Coronation Scene from Boris Godunov [Edited by K. Marie Stolba] On Development of western music, Vol. 2, No. 4.[CD]. Madison, Wis.: Brown and Benchmark.


Example of Rerecording by artist other than composer with different recording date:

Goodenough, J. B. (1982). Tails and trotters [Recorded by G. Bok, A. Mayo, & E. Trickett]. On And so will we yet [CD]. Sharon, CT; Folk- Legacy Records. (1990).

Music Video recordings and DVDS

1. Name of Producer(s) followed by (Producer)

2. Name of Director(s)/Writer(s)/Composer(s) followed by (Director/Writer/Composer)

3. Date of release in parenthesis ()

4. Composer, if this is important to identify the work

5. Title (italicised) - immediately followed by video recording or DVD in [square brackets]

6. Place of origin (followed by a colon):

7. Studio producing the video/dvd

 

Examples:

De Paul, J. (Producer), & Greenburg, R. (Director). (1999). Gilbert, W.S. & Sullivan, A. The Mikado [Video recording]. Sydney: Roadshow Entertainment.

Mayo, M. (Producer), Trovato, S., & Wyatt, K. (Directors). (1989). Swing jazz [Video recording]. Seattle: REH Video.

Reviews

1. Review author(s)

2. Date of publication in parenthesis ()

3. Review Title

4. Medium being reviewed in [square brackets]

5. Periodical title (reviews are generally published in a periodical), italicised

6. Publication information; title in italics, volume number, issue and pages numbers. Refer to  Referencing at CQU for guidelines.

 

Example:

Kraus, S. J. (1992). Visions of psychology [Review of the motion picture Discovering Psychology]. Contemporary psychology, 37, 1146 - 1147.
