Guide to locating psychological tests

CQU Library does not actively collect psychology tests - this includes scales, measures, inventories and surveys.

Some tests may be held in the collection, but only if they have been published in a book or a journal which has been acquired for another purpose.

If you are looking for information about psychological testing, you may like to try the resources located at the following call numbers: 150.287 and 153.93

Types of psychological tests

Published tests

These are psychological tests which are available from commercial publishers for a fee. These tests are usually listed in a psychological test directory.

Unpublished tests

These tests are not available from commercial publishers. Some may be freely available on the Internet; others may have been included as an appendix to a scholarly article reporting on a particular study.

Test directories

Test directories provide details about published psychological tests. They usually include background information about tests (i.e. purpose, creator, structure) as well as information concerning their publication (i.e. publisher, date of publication, cost, availability for purchase.) Some will even include evaluations of the test.

How to locate a published test

Ask the Faculty

A number of psychological tests are located in the School of Psychology and Sociology. You will need to seek the faculty's permission to access this test library. Please contact Kevin Ronan.

Purchase a copy

Check out the publisher's website or see if the test is for sale via one of the Psychological test suppliers listed on the Australian Psychological Society (APS) website.

Note: To find out publisher details, try searching a test directory.

Note: The publisher may require you to fill in a form outlining your qualifications to ensure that you are capable of administering the test and interpreting the results.

How to locate an unpublished test

- Search the Internet

Occasionally, a test will be freely available on the web.

Try searching one of the search engines listed on Successful Web Searching - Search Engines using the test and the creator's name (if you know it):

Example:
example in Google

Note: Remember that this kind of search will bring up results about the test as well as the test itself (if it is available online).

- Search PsycINFO

Unpublished instruments may appear in the journal article which first mentions them.

Try searching PsycINFO using the test and the creator's name (if you know it):

Example: zuckerman (Author) AND sensation seeking scale
searching in PsycINFO
