About the MBI

The Morning Bulletin is the local newspaper for Rockhampton and district.

The MBI indexes articles considered important to the economic, political, social and cultural development of the Central Queensland region.

Articles may refer to persons, corporate bodies, or any newsworthy topic.

Regular, continuing indexing began on January 1, 1977.

IMPORTANT: The MBI does not contain full-text articles

Instead, it provides information which will enable you to access the articles on microfilm or in print i.e. the article's title, date, page number.

The latest copies of "The Morning Bulletin" are available in print at the Rockhampton campus.

Papers pre-dating June 2005 are available on microfilm from the Rockhampton campus library. Two microfilm readers are available in the Library.

 

Students at campuses other than Rockhampton, and off-campus students, can request copies of articles by submitting a Request a photocopy form.

How to search the MBI

- How to search for records which contain a particular keyword

Type the keyword into the search box.

Example: If you enter the keyword theft, the database will retrieve all records containing theft.

How to search for records which contain a particular phrase

Type the phrase into the into the search box. Use inverted commas.

Example: If you enter the phrase "car theft", the database will retrieve all records containing car theft.

- How to search for records which contain more than one keyword or phrase

Include "and" between your keywords or phrases.

Example: If you are searching for articles discussing the impact of drought on the cattle industry, you could search for "cattle industry" and drought. This search will retrieve records containing cattle industry and drought.

- How to search for records which contain at least one keyword or phrase

Include "or" between your keywords or phrases.

Example: If you are searching for articles about the university, you could search for CQU or "Central Queensland University". This search will retrieve three kinds of records:

- How to search for all records from a particular day or date range

Leave the search box blank. Select the date or date range you wish to search in.

Example: If you are searching for articles published in The Morning Bulletin between 1/9/2003 and 8/9/2003, you should use the drop down boxes to select 1 SEP 2003 and 8 SEP 2003. If you are searching for all records from a particular day you will need to select the date twice i.e. 1 SEP 2003 and 1 SEPT 2003.

- How to search for similar keywords

A keyword followed by an asterisk will retrieve all records where the keyword is the first part of a word in the record.

Example: A search for child* will retrieve all records containing the words child, children, childhood, childless etc.

- How to choose your keywords and phrases

Remember to use terms that you would expect to find in newspaper articles.

Example: If you were searching for information about the centre of town, you might try keywords and phrases such as CBD, "city centre", "city heart" and "central business district".

Date

DD/MM/YYYY i.e. 21/06/2003

Subject

Each article is allocated a subject. This is usually the main topic of the article, but it can also be a place (i.e. Mount Morgan), person (i.e. Biography - Bloggs, Joe) or organisation (i.e. Endeavour Foundation).

Title

The heading appearing over the item as published in "The Morning Bulletin". Sometimes, an additional term to further clarify the content of the article may be shown in square brackets.

Day

 i.e. MON = Monday, TUE = Tuesday etc.

PG

Page number/s i.e. 1 or 1-2 or 1, 3
