Archives and Repositories

An archive is "a collection of historical documents or records"  (OUP, 2004). A repository is defined as "a place or receptacle for storage" (OUP, 2004).

This collection contains links to archival collections and document repositories in Australia and overseas.

Archives of Australia

A network developed by various Australian archival organisations to effectively manage and use resources available through the Internet.

Australian Historic Records Register (AHRR)

A database containing descriptions of privately owned archival materials of historical significance.

Australian War Memorial (AWM)

A commemoration of Australia's sacrifice in World War I, the Memorial provides an extensive archive with official war records and biographical databases.

National Archives of Australia

Cares for valuable Commonwealth records and encourages satisfactory government recordkeeping. Offers a substantial resource for the study of Australian history.

The Pandora Archive

A project by the National Library of Australia to preserve and provide access to networked documentary resources of Australia.

Queensland State Archives

Stores Queensland's government records and manages their recordkeeping framework. Provides a research facility for the study of local and family history.

Register of Australian Archives & Manuscripts (RAAM)

Lists archival materials of a personal or non-governmental nature that are held by Australian libraries and archives.

ScreenSound Australia

The nation's screen and sound archive collects, preserves, and shares Australia's audiovisual history in the forms of sound recordings and moving images, dating back to the 1890s.

A database of electronic theses documents produced postgraduate research students at participating universities.

Archives New Zealand

Gathers, preserves, and stores New Zealand's heritage materials.

The National Archives (UK)

One of the largest archival collections in the world, this repository covers 1000 years of British history up to the current release of government records.

U.S. National Archives & Records Administration (NARA)

The U.S. government body responsible for preserving the nation's history and providing access to those historical materials.

International Council on Archives (ICA)

Brings together national archival administrations to promote the preservation and sharing of the world's archival heritage.

Repositories of Primary Sources

A list, created by the University of Idaho, describing physical collections of historical and archival materials.

UNESCO Archives Portal

A directory with links to worldwide archival associations, education and training, conferences and exhibitions, etc.

Worldwide directory of archives & manuscripts

A list, provided by the University of Columbia, linking the user to archives and document repositories across the world, of both government and non-government natures.
