The Australian and New Zealand Institute for Information Literacy (ANZIIL) supports organisations, institutions and individuals in the promotion of information literacy and, in particular, the embedding of information literacy within the total educational process. CQU Library has been actively involved in the Institute. The Library was one of the first institutions to join ANZIIL. Debbie Orr was a member of the Advisory Board as well as the Communications Group.
The Society is quite active in the Mackay community running:
The AGM was held on 9th March. Thirty members attended. Robin Taylor was
guest speaker and spoke on "Ancient Tales for Modern Times".
The Library Society Book Club held regular meetings during 2004 on a bi-monthly
basis.
The Annual Secondhand Book Sale was held in September. It was again successful
raising $1252.80. Thank you to Mackay Library Society members who volunteered to
assist with the sale and who sorted and priced items every Wednesday for months.
The regular Friday film evenings continue and 9 films were shown in 2004.
They continue to prove popular with attendance figures ranging from 45-80. The
Society arranged for Peter Clout to be the facilitator for film evenings and
film festival, and this has proved to be successful. The film evenings raised $1
793.56.
The Annual International Film Festival was held in November. The Society
received a RADF grant of $2500 towards the festival. Nine films were shown over
the week-end with an average attendance of 45. The festival raised $1793.56.
The Festival was nominated for two awards by the Arts-is-in Regional Arts
Awards. These were:
Unfortunately neither nomination was successful.
The Society was essentially inactive during the year. Despite the best of intentions by members at the AGM there was very little activity to support the Collection during the year. Library staff presented new acquisitions to members in July, and with the help of Collection volunteers presented a display on East St for the University Open Day and multi-cultural fair.
Bundaberg
Over 2004 the library continued to provide tours for such activities as the Shadowing programme, Discover CQU, and CQU Experience. Local schools in the Bundaberg region have access to the Library under a special agreement.
Gladstone
Karin Simon attended many of the scheduled meetings of the Port Curtis
Library Network. The Gladstone campus will be playing host to the Port Curtis
Literary Carnivale July 2005 which the group has been planning for the latter
part of this year.
Head of Campus and Karin attended a meeting with the Gladstone Public Library
Librarian, Peter Cram, to discuss opportunities for marketing of services and
collaboration. The result of this meeting was the creation of a joint pamphlet
describing the services offered by both organizations and advertising some
methods of cooperation and assistance available.
2 library sessions were held for the Golden Years group. The library sessions
were extensions of the Sociology course they were doing on campus.
Karin Simon also conducted a library tour for a group of people from the community
representing various groups. e.g high school principals, Comalco staff, etc.
Mackay
Mackay Library continues to provide tours for local high schools as part of the Discover CQU program. Local schools in the Mackay region have access to the Library under a special agreement.
Rockhampton
The Library hosted a number of tours for community groups and schools organised through the Division of University Relations. Local schools in the Rockhampton region have access to the Library under a special agreement.
The Library hosted some displays and a competition for the University Open Day and Multicultural Fair. The major display was the art exhibition of the Queensland Minister for Education's 2003 Award for Excellence. This touring exhibition featured art works of secondary school students from all over Queensland.
