Information Resources and Access |
The Australian and New Zealand Institute for Information Literacy (ANZIIL) supports organisations, institutions and individuals in the promotion of information literacy and, in particular, the embedding of information literacy within the total educational process. CQU Library has been actively involved in the Institute. The Library was one of the first institutions to join ANZIIL. Debbie Orr was a member of the Advisory Board as well as the Communications Group.
The Society is quite active in the Mackay community running:
The AGM was held on 15th March. Delma Clifton was guest speaker and spoke on "Koala Research on St. Bee's Island".
The Library Society Book Club co-ordinated by Moyea McLean held regular meetings during 2005 on a bi-monthly basis.
A trivia night was held at the Shamrock Hotel in April raising $611. It was very well attended and thanks you to the various businesses within the community that donated prizes.
The Annual Secondhand Book Sale was held in September. It was again successful raising $2,420, $1,000 more than 2004. Thank you to Mackay Library Society members who volunteered to assist with the sale and who sorted and priced items every Wednesday for months.
The regular Friday film evenings continue and 9 films were shown in 2005. They continue to prove popular with attendance figures ranging from 45-80. The Society arranged for Peter Clout to be the facilitator for film evenings and film festival, and this has proved to be successful.
The Annual International Film Festival was held in November. This festival provides an opportunity for exposure to art house and foreign films for the Mackay community not being met else where thereby increasing the availability of cultural diversity within the region.
The Society received a RADF grant of $3,100 towards the festival. Nine feature films and 6 short films were shown over the weekend. The festival raised $1,793.56 with a total of 460 people attending the films during the weekend. This included the purchase of 35 season tickets.
Despite the best of intentions by members at the 2004 AGM there was very little activity to support the Capricornia Collection Society during the following year. Consequently, at the AGM in July it was decided that the society move into abeyance.
With the help of Society volunteers, the library presented a well-received display of images of early Rockhampton (in recognition of 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Archer brothers) for the University Open Day and Multicultural fair.
Bundaberg
Over 2005 the library continued to provide tours for such activities as the Shadowing programme, Discover CQU, and CQU Experience. A library session was held for a small number of students (18) from Isis High School on finding and evaluating information from the world wide web.
Teaching staff from local schools in the Bundaberg region have access to the Library under a special agreement. Approximately 50 community members and students from other universities joined the library.
Gladstone
Gladstone campus library continued to foster relationships with the wider community in 2005. Karin continued her involvement in the Port Curtis Library Network. The Network organized and hosted an inaugural Literary Carnivale. Visiting authors and illustrators ran sessions for school students and their parents. This will now become an annual event.
Head of Campus and Karin attended a meeting with the Gladstone Public Library Librarian, Peter Cram, to discuss opportunities for marketing of services and collaboration. The result of this meeting was the creation of a joint pamphlet describing the services offered by both organizations and advertising some methods of cooperation and assistance available.
2 library sessions were held for the Golden Years group. The library sessions were extensions of the Sociology course they were doing on campus.
Karin Simon also conducted a library tour for a group of people from the community representing various groups. e.g high school principals, Comalco staff, etc.
The Library played a role in this year’s QTAC information day. The Library was open to prospective and other year 12 students wishing to change their QTAC preferences after OPs were published.
The Library conducted informal session with year 12 students from Chanel College and State High schools during their Uni Experience visits to the campus.
Mackay
Mackay Library continues to provide tours for local high schools as part of the Discover CQU program.
Mackay Library signed an Agreement with Mackay Orchestras Inc on 01/09/2005 to incorporate their significant collection of Orchestral Scores, including those of the Mackay Symphony Orchestra into the library collection. At the time of signing the agreement the MOI collection was valued at $13,752.15, and the Mackay Symphony collection valued at $33,000. CQCM staff, CQU Orchestra conductors, Mackay Orchestra conductors, and School Music specialists in the Mackay region are entitled to borrow from the collection.
Rockhampton
The Division of CQU Library signed a one-year agreement with the Mackay Health Service District Library to provide free interlibrary loans of print materials and document delivery of electronic resources, where licensing conditions permit, between the two libraries.
The Library meeting room was selected as the venue to co-host a Cocktail Party for the Teaching and Learning Showcase and was used by a number of other Faculties and Divisions to host activities.
The Library hosted a number of tours for community groups and schools organised through the Division of University Relations. Local schools in the Rockhampton region continue to have access to the Library under a special agreement.
Lending services staff took on the responsibility for school tours. To ensure some uniformity with the information provided on tours, a script has been written and provides students with interesting statistics about the building and size of the collection.
