Information Literacy

@CQU Library

Students

Information literate students are competent, independent learners. They recognise when information is needed, they know how to find what is needed and can actively engage in the world of ideas. They are confident in their ability to solve problems and present new ideas.

Information literacy is closely related to academic achievement and lifelong learning.  It enables individuals to participate as professional employees in their chosen careers and to make valuable contributions to society.

The Library offers a range of services to assist students learn the skills needed to become information literate.

Library tours

During Orientation Week there are a number of tours of the Library.  The purpose is to welcome students and to help them become familiar with the building, services and staff.  Tours take about 20 minutes and may include a brief demonstration of the web page. Library tours are introductory and not intended to replace library classes.

Classes and programs

Academic staff discuss the information literacy needs of their students with the Faculty Liaison Librarians.  Needs differ between the disciplines and some students will attend more sessions than others.

For students who can't attend Faculty-based sessions or who wish to make a start before their scheduled session, the Library offers a number of generic sessions.  A schedule of all classes is available in week 1 of each term.

Online tutorials

There are online tutorials which teach useful skills such as how to construct a search strategy, how to reference and how to evaluate sources.

Subject Area Guides
These are guides to information resources by course, topic of program.  Distance education students will find them a useful starting point.

Information Desk
There is always a librarian rostered on the Information Desk and it is their job to help you locate and use information resources.  If your request is highly specialised the librarian rostered on the Information Desk will arrange for you to see your Faculty Liaison Librarian.
