Tips and tricks from the Faculty Liaison
Librarians
Some of the links below
require a username and password. To obtain a list of user names and passwords
on the web enter your student number and library barcode (staff: enter library
barcode number twice) in the
password
form. If you have any difficulties obtaining the user names and passwords
on the web contact the CQU Library email: cqulibrary@cqu.edu.au
or by telephone 1300 369 038.
Using sources:
Theses
Unpublished papers
- search by author on one of the
databases that includes author affiliation
- contact the author and request
a copy of the paper
- search the world wide web for
eprint archives
Newspapers
- CQU Library has a subscription to
NewsBank,
which allows full text access to a large number of International and Australian
newspapers.
- CQU Library has created the
Morning
Bulletin Index consisting of listings for any news item given some degree
of prominence in the pages of The Morning Bulletin which relates to any part
of the Central Queensland region.
Statistics
- there is a range of statistical
sources - including government departments and the
ABS - some can be found at CQU Library's statistics
website
- CQU Library often purchases specific
products (compiled statistics) eg. CData,
SEIFA
- there are also collections of
raw data. These generally need to be purchased from the relevant authority/organisation
eg. ABS and
ASSDA
(Social Sciences Data Archive) from
ACSPRI
(Australian Consortium for Social and Political Research Incorporated)
Conference Proceedings
- there is no single way to track
conference proceedings - some are catalogued as books and others are indexed
on major indexes such as ERIC and
APAIS
- it is often worth searching for
the name of the organising body or association on the Web as proceedings (or
individual papers) are frequently available.
- some conference proceedings are
refereed, some aren't
Bibliographies
- good starting point
- other authors/researchers have
done a lot of the work for you
- not all material will be available
at CQU, but would be accessible via document
delivery
- often can be dated
